Update Insurance

Update your insurance company on your move; make sure they have your new address. Now is an excellent time to review your coverage and think about expanding or changing it if needed.

Visit the DMV

You’ll need to get a local driver’s license and vehicle tabs. Some states have requirements as to the time frame in which these new documents must be obtained. Be prepared to provide vehicle insurance information to the DMV to register your vehicle(s). Ask your DMV about your new home’s voter registration policies while you’re there.

Forward Your Mail

Call the post office to have your mail forwarded to your new address.

  • Periodicals and magazines will only forward for 60 days, so if you have any magazine subscriptions, don’t forget to share your new address with the magazine company.
  • Other first-class mail, such as credit card bills and bank statements, will forward for 12 months, but it’s a good idea to update your address with those companies as well.

Before You Hand Over the Keys

  • Leave any remaining touchup paint, carpet remnants, and similar items behind for the buyers.
  • Place all manuals, extra keys, fan remotes, and garage door openers on the kitchen counter for the buyers.
  • If the property has keypads with access codes, provide them to your listing agent so they can be shared with the buyers.
  • Leave the property in broom‑swept clean condition.
  • Wipe out all appliances prior to closing.
  • Do not remove affixed mirrors, TV mounts, towel bars, window blinds, draperies, curtains, curtain rods, and similar attached items from the property.
  • Fill and paint any large holes in the walls.

Summary

Before you hand over the keys, make sure these important move‑out steps are completed to ensure a smooth transition for both you and the buyers.
