Buyer To-Do List

Welcome to your new home! Here’s what to do next.

Transfer Utilities Into Your Name

  • Gas
  • Electric
  • Garbage & Recycling
  • Water / Sewer
  • Cable / Phone / Internet

Update Insurance

Update your insurance company on your move; make sure they have your new address. Now is an excellent time to review your coverage and think about expanding or changing it if needed.

Visit the DMV

You’ll need to get a local driver’s license and vehicle tabs. Some states have requirements as to the time frame in which these new documents must be obtained. Be prepared to provide vehicle insurance information to the DMV to register your vehicle(s). Ask your DMV about your new home’s voter registration policies while you’re there.

Forward Your Mail

Call the post office to have your mail forwarded to your new address.

  • Periodicals and magazines will only forward for 60 days, so if you have any magazine subscriptions, don’t forget to share your new address with the magazine company.
  • Other first-class mail, such as credit card bills and bank statements, will forward for 12 months, but it’s a good idea to update your address with those companies as well.

Find Primary Care Providers

Seek out providers for the following services as soon as you can. Even if you don’t need to use them right away, it’s nice to know who you can contact if an emergency pops up. Your previous medical providers or insurance company might be able to offer you a referral in your new area, and your Realtor® will be happy to help too.

  • Primary Care Physician and other doctors – think Pediatricians or Optometrists
  • Dentists and Orthodontists
  • Veterinarians

Make Connections

Meet people! Introduce yourself to your neighbors and learn about your community. Ask your new neighbors or co-workers for their recommendations for the best area auto-mechanic, hair stylist, coffee shop, etc. Look for community-based clubs or organizations, attend local farmers markets, and visit a local art gallery. Sign up for NextDoor, a private social network that helps you stay in the loop about what’s going on in your neighborhood. Learn more: https://nextdoor.com

Embrace the Great Outdoors

If you enjoy hunting, fishing, or boating, make sure to ask your agent about where to learn about regulations for these activities and obtain necessary licenses.

Prepare for the Seasons

Whether your new home has you living in Alaska, Nevada, or New York – be sure to prepare for the climate. Ask your agent and neighbors about what to expect, if there is anything you should purchase (like a snow shovel, a good rain jacket, or extra sunblock) before seasons change.

Summary

Whether transferring utilities or buying winter gear, remember to complete these items when you move homes.
